There are tons of samurai movie out there. Ranging from anime to real movie, most of them are pretty awesome. Holding katana, slashing people and even some of them have superpower given to each character. So, what make this movie different from other samurai movie?? It looks to me 47 Ronin have some story to tell.
For starter, here is a summary of the plot. So, this is a story of a boy named Kai (Keanu Reeves) who ran away from a Tengu Village. He almost got killed by Oishi (Hiroyuki Sanada) if it wasn’t for Lord Asano (Min Tanaka) who saved him. The lord adopted him although many of his samurais despised and called him half-breed (demon). Several years happened and Kai still Lord Asano out of loyalty and debt. Asano’s daughter, Mika (Ko Shibasaki) is in love with although their positions are as in master and servant.
Anyway, an evil lord named Lord Kira (Tadanobu Asano) visited Asano’s castle alongside with Shogun Tsunayoshi for an annual battle between two armies. The match ended badly when Kai interfered the match. Kira’s witch, Witch (Rinko Kikuchi) bewitched Asano to go berserk. It’s like adding oil into a fire. The consequences are really severe. Asano committed seppuku as the Shogun ordered it and the country fall into Lord Kira’s hand. Also, the samurais become ronin (all 47 of them) and prohibited to seek revenge.
After a year, they seek revenge for their dead lord, defying the Shogun’s order. They cleverly devised a plan to trespassing Lord Kira’s castle and seized it. Kai fought with the Witch trying to save Mika. Oh yeah, she became a dragon. The evil lord died in the samurai leader’s hand, Oishi.
The characters in this movie is good but not that excellent. Their acting are good but not their overall performance. Keanu Reeves’s acting is kinda mighty. I mean he’s a hero or the protagonist but I feel like he’s just desperate for attention. And his lines are somehow awkward. But, the most worst actress I have ever seen is the Rinko Kikuchi. It’s so shallow and not really seductive to me. well, she tried to be but not enough. She’s not even that pretty. Most of the main characters are Japanese but their English accent are quite excellent. Very clear and easy to understand. Also, seeing as this is their home town, it is not awkward to see them wearing katanas or performing cultural events.
The CGI is not massive but enough to tell a story. No less and no more. What’s more important are the katanas. Sweet katanas. I love katana so much so I got no word for the weapons. I don’t know much about Japanese cultural events or procedural things but it’s kinda cool to see those. I’m just not sure it’s accurate enough. Either way, they are very colorful.
For my final verdict, I would say that this movie is nice to watch. At most, twice. The story developed very slow although it’s crucial for the whole movie. There’s not much for action except for the last invasion. Well, it’s nice to watch it but this movie will not get into my replay list. Maybe. After I forgot the plot. LOL.
